The reason we’re always fascinated with Manish Malhotra’s design story is because of his ability to evoke emotions through statement-making pieces. His couture collection, Portraits is a contemporary rendition of the past. Designed for the Indian neo-bride, the collection allows you to soak in the absolute old-world glamour with modern edginess. The approach is crucial. How do you reinvent traditions in couture without getting repetitive? Manish’s attention to detail has successfully integrated the past and the present through a stunning tableau of colours, fabrics and silhouettes. He filled the runway with floor-length anarkalis, sarees, velvet jackets and bandhgalas detailed with Kashmiri zari karigari and ivory thread-work to achieve the antique vintage touch. Raw silk lehengas in jewel tones, bandhgalas, asymmetrical jackets and exquisite neckline detailing were opulent yet simple, modern yet traditional. In Manish’s words, “Fashion shows are my weddings. This collection speaks about Indian couture and bridal. Emerald green and vintage red is the mood of the season. The package is very modern. Gold also defines the look.” The collection was showcased at Shree Raj Mahal Jewellers India Couture Week 2014 organized by FDCI
